Review: Trine 2 Goblin Menace DLC

On September 14, 2012 by Tonci

Sorry about the meme. Now, the review. If you loved Trine 2, you will love the Goblin Menace expansion. If you didn’t, nothing here to change your mind. It’s more of the same, this time in new, exotic locations with a few new tricks and environmental challenges to keep things fresh.

My hat’s off to whoever designed the levels. The new locales like the scorching desert and a belly of a giant monster are one of the most impressive levels I have ever seen in an indie game. There are 5 new levels + 6th, boss battle level. All levels feature all new treasures and poems, even your heroes got a few new tricks up their sleeves, if you can afford them. I loved how Pontius the knight can now float by holding his shield above his head, a nod to the classic Lost Vikings game which was an obvious inspiration for the Trine series.

Sadly, we live in an age where DLC is usually little more than a scam by developers made to trick you into buying the content that’s already on disc, and where most DLC is overpriced new costumes that should be free, or shovelware bulk DLC’s like Magicka and Dungeon Defenders are spewing every 3 days. Seriously, you two, stop it.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure 2 USD “Zoya in a bikini” and “Pontius with a minigun” DLC’s for Trine 2 would sell pretty good, but it’s heartwarming to see that developers like Frozenbyte still exist – the developers that took the time to make a real expansion to the game that adds REAL content to the game.

Summary: Goblin Menace is well worth the asking price if you’re a fan of the Trine series and you want more. If not, nothing new here to change your mind.

Verdict: 8 out of 10

Platforms: PC, Wii U, Mac, Linux, PSN, Xbox live

Goblin Menace was developed by Frozenbyte and is available on Steam, and via the developers’ website.
