Instead of building a deck of cards, Astrea gives you a growing collection of dice. Each die comes with different actions, so much of the strategy comes from deciding which dice to add, upgrade, or remove as your run develops.
The game also puts an interesting spin on health and damage with its Purification and Corruption system. Purification can hurt enemies or heal you, while Corruption can hurt you or restore enemies. Taking Corruption can even activate powerful abilities, which means occasionally hurting yourself is a perfectly sensible strategy. Please do not apply this logic outside the game.
There are several playable Oracles with different mechanics, customizable dice, companion Sentinels, and plenty of relics and upgrades to experiment with. Runs gradually become more complicated as you discover new combinations and find increasingly creative ways to manipulate your odds.
Astrea also received a major anniversary update earlier this month, adding new Blessings, Sentinels, events, and run modifiers, so this is a particularly good time to pick it up.
