Prologue: Go Wayback! is now available as a free-to-play game on Steam, and it is a pretty interesting one if you like survival games that do not hold your hand.
This is a single-player open-world survival roguelike from PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions, the studio founded by Brendan Greene, best known as the creator of PUBG. But do not expect battle royale chaos here. This is slower, colder, lonelier, and much more focused on trying not to become a human popsicle in the wilderness.

The idea is simple: every run drops you into a newly generated 64 km² wilderness, and your goal is to make your way toward the distant Weather Tower. No quest markers. No minimap. No glowing trail of “please go here, gamer.” Just you, a map, a compass, the weather, and the slow realization that maybe hiking is easier when Steam achievements are not involved.
You will need to manage hunger, thirst, body temperature, rain, snow, wind, shelter, and navigation. The game also uses in-house machine-learning technology to generate new terrain maps offline on your PC, so each journey should feel different. Basically, the game looks at you and says: “Here is a forest. Good luck.”
Steam reviews are currently Mixed, with 63% of 413 user reviews positive, so this may not be for everyone. But if you like survival games that are more about atmosphere, route planning, weather, and getting lost in a believable wilderness, this is definitely worth testing while it costs nothing.
